In a few short weeks it will officially be flower season in Abbotsford.
Lakeland Flowers begins its six-month celebration of flowers starting with the Abbotsford Tulip Festival on April 15.
The event features 35 acres of tulips and field flowers and more than 100 varieties of tulips will be on display.
Highlights include walking trails, specialty varietals that have been imported from Holland and a legacy tulip named after Peter Warmerdam, father of the owner and farmer of Lakeland Flowers Nick Warmerdam.
“We were so grateful to meet the thousands of people who came to our farm last season,” stated Nick Warmerdam. “Connecting with visitors is my favourite part of the festival. Every year we improve the visitor experience and this year we added more photo opps, tulips, and specialty varieties. From the end of May and on, our guests can expect to see more blooms right until early September.”
The Abbotsford Tulip Festival is open from dawn until dusk and is scheduled to run until May 15.
Photo opps include baby grand pianos, canoes, giant klompen (Dutch word for wooden shoes that visitors can sit in), bicycles, swings and raised viewing platforms. Visitors can also take in live music nights and are invited to pack a picnic or sample food truck meals.
Online tickets are available one week in advance with tiered pricing options for weekdays and weekends. It is recommended that visitors purchase tickets online to not only receive reduced pricing, but to secure a time-slot.
Daily field reports will be available on the Lakeland Flowers website and social media.
Later in May and June will see Lakeland Flowers showcase 30 acres of peonies, lupins, Siberian wallflowers, and lavender. Lakeland Flowers’ summer flower festival ends with over 40 acres of sunflowers, 80 varieties of flowering crops, and 20 species of cut flowers.
Free parking is available at 3663 Marion Rd., which is located off of No.4 Road in east Abbotsford.
